LANDSHIRE SANDWICHES
With a 3,000 bank loan with four guarantors, two of which were his sister Janet and her husband Otto Klinger, Ray started a pre-packaged sandwich company called Landshire in 1959 while still in college. This became a 17-year journey… a journey that grew into a multi-million dollar business with Landshire franchises in 37 cities throughout the United States, Caracas Venezuela, and the Virgin Islands.
The foundation for the growth was Ray’s invention of a unique Infrared rapid heat oven that allowed for the introduction to clients like Amtrak, sports stadiums, large high schools, and universities. The creativity of building a specialized bun bakery further propelled the growth of sandwich sales into grocery chains throughout the US.
A fleet of refrigerated local delivery trucks plus refrigerated tractor-trailers assured the clients of fresh quality products.
Ray was approached in 1977 by the Southland Corporation, the parent company of 7-eleven to purchase Landshire. He agreed to their offer. To this day you can buy pre-packaged sandwiches in 7-eleven stores.
